October 18th Meeting Recap

A regular meeting of the Board of Commissioners was held on October 18th. The Board took the following actions:

  • Heard a legislative and advocacy update from Mike McIntyre, Ward and Smith. Representatives from the Ferguson Group also attended the meeting via conference call. Mr. McIntyre provided information on Washington news. He explained his group, along with Town staff have been in discussions with the Corps of Engineers and our Congressional delegation regarding the Corps’ Coastal Storm Risk Management Study. He encouraged the Board to bring the Corps back to answer any questions they have regarding the study. Mr. McIntyre also provided information on the three earmark requests for the Town ($1,00,000 for the General Reevaluation Report, $2,669,867 for the Greensboro Street Lift Station #2 Hazard Mitigation Project and $100,000 for the Ocean Boulevard Stormwater Mitigation Project). He is optimistic that all three projects will go through. 
  • Approved the contract for the NC Parks and Recreation Trust Fund Grant (PARTF). The state approved $500,000 for the Holden Beach Pier Project. 
  • Heard reports from Chief Dixon and Inspections Director Evans.
  • Asked Inspections Director Evans for more information on the Planning & Zoning Board’s response to the Board’s tasker concerning frontal dunes (Code of Ordinances Section 94.03 Frontal Dune Policies and Regulations). Inspections Director Evans agreed to provide the information at the next meeting. 
  • Approved Public Works Director Clemmons’ request to have Green Engineering advertise for bids on the Greensboro Street Lift Station #2 Project.
  • Heard a report from Public Works Director Clemmons on sewer system issues during Hurricane Ian.
  • Heard educational information from Mayor Holden and Inspections Director Evans on vinyl siding.
  • Agreed to have the Town’s engineer, Right Angle Engineering, pursue CAMA permits and pricing of bulkheads for the areas the Town had delineated in the 700 and 800 blocks.
  • Asked Town Manager Hewett to put together a Request for Qualifications for a study to evaluate the need and options for moving forward with a second water tower.
  • Agreed to suspend the paid parking season and Otto enforcement as of the 28th of October in order to accommodate parking for the Festival by the Sea.
  • Town Manager Hewett presented the Budget Reportfor the first quarter.
  • Held a closed session to consult with the attorney and to discuss personnel.
